Adventure Vow Renewal in Kauai | Na'Pali Coast, Kauai Adventurous Elopement
An Adventurous Vow Renewal on a Remote Beach on the Na’Pali Coast, Kauai
A few months ago, Aaron came home from work and told Anastasia “I think we need to go to Hawaii”. About an hour later of this conversation; completely unbeknownst to me, I texted Anastasia- “We’re going to Kauai! You and Aaron are welcome to come!”. It was like the stars aligned perfectly, to bring us together. A few days later, they booked their flights to Kauai as we discussed plans of exploration on the island. Anastasia has been a friend of mine for awhile, as I've watched her numerous dreams bloom and grow. (She’s the violinist of the famous Musical Mountaineers & Inventor/Creator of the Kula Cloth). When she inquired about renewing her vows, I was so stoked to be a part of this day. As a photographer, I value the relationships with my clients over anything, as it creates a sacred space when you have that connection. It was an honor and incredible few days capturing Anastasia and Aaron’s relationship.
A few days prior to their renewal, we all went on a backpacking trip in Waimea Canyon, as another popular backpacking destination had been closed since April of 2018. It was a lot of fun, but on our way out of the Canyon, Anastasia’s throat started to hurt; day by day she lost her voice and her sickness raged on. We had planned to hike an 8 mile trail for Sunrise in Kōkeʻe State Park, but Anastasia was still not feeling her best to wake up at the 1AM needed and to then hike for 8 miles. So, I did what any other person would do….. I improvised to find a solution.
I climbed to the top of a sand dune, where I found service on the remote beach we were at and found an alternate location where I checked the lighting of the destination. We decided this was a winner and moved on with plans to wake up at 5AM, instead of 1AM.
It was a beautiful morning and the light was incredible as it peeked over the mountain framing the coast of the remote beach. Anastasia and Aaron renewed their vows on a beach that morning. I think it was meant to happen this way as they said their wedding vows on a beach in Tahiti almost 4 years prior. The universe always has a way of working out exactly the way it’s supposed to.
Anastasia shared her vow-renewal experience in her own words, in a beautiful Instagram post She said: “ I’ve tried writing this caption 4 times already, and I am finding it a challenge to pick words that can adequately express our experience renewing our vows with @marievanderpoolphoto.
Just like marriage, things did not go as planned. I was horribly sick, and barely able to speak my vows out loud... @marievanderpoolphoto had to pick a different location at the last minute since I was too sick to hike... The night before the elopement, we stayed up in our tent until after midnight as we both put the final touches on our vows - vows that we chose to write from a new place in our marriage that resembled nothing like the vows we uttered 4 years ago.
4 years ago, my husband didn’t know that his wife would decide to leave her job to chase her dreams. 4 years ago, I didn’t know I was marrying a man that wouldn’t blink an eye when I told him what I wanted to do. 4 years ago, I never dreamed that we’d be performing music together. Last week, we carried our instruments into the mountains with a unicorn mask and a Sasquatch costume.
The vows we first said were not wrong - they were just new. The vows we spoke on this remote beach in Kauai came with something different - a deep love and respect that can only come from a moment when you look into somebody else’s eyes and can instantly recall a million stories of good and bad and everything in between.
A marriage is a big deal, but don’t let your wedding day be the last time that you say ‘I do.’ Say it everyday. Don’t hesitate to make a vow renewal something special - because it is. I once thought that vow renewals were for people who had been married for decades, but maybe it’s that the people who renew their vows are the ones who are married for decades ❤️ I simply cannot recommend @marievanderpoolphoto enough. There is nobody else that could capture moments this beautiful, even amidst barely audible-sobbing laryngitis-lung vows ❤️”
I hope you enjoy the remainder of this beautiful and playful gallery which I documented during the trip!
